If you own a Peugeot, CitroΓ«n, Vauxhall, or DS with the 1.2 PureTech engine, or a 1.5 BlueHDi diesel, you need to be aware of a critical update regarding the oil your engine uses. Stellantis has recently introduced a mandatory new oil specification: FPW9.55535/03.
Using the wrong oil in these engines β specifically the older PSA B71 2312 specification β is now known to accelerate the degradation of the infamous "wet belt" (belt-in-oil) system. Here is what you need to know to protect your engine.
What is the FPW9.55535/03 Specification?
Stellantis FPW9.55535/03 is a high-performance 5W-30 viscosity engine oil specification designed specifically to combat the unique challenges of modern engines, particularly those with a timing belt running inside the oil bath.
It replaces earlier specifications and was engineered to provide enhanced protection against:
- Wet Belt Degradation: The chemical additives in the new oil are significantly less aggressive towards the rubber polymers of the timing belt.
- LSPI (Low-Speed Pre-Ignition): A phenomenon common in small turbocharged engines where fuel ignites prematurely, causing severe piston damage.
- Deposit Formation: It helps keep the oil pickup strainer clear of debris, preventing oil starvation.
Why Did Stellantis Make This Change?
The 1.2 PureTech engine is notorious for premature timing belt failure. As we detailed in our PureTech Crisis guide, the belt degrades, swells, and sheds rubber fibres into the oil. These fibres clog the oil pump strainer, leading to a catastrophic loss of oil pressure and complete engine failure.
Engineers identified that certain chemical compounds in previous oil generations accelerated this rubber degradation. The new FPW9.55535/03 standard strictly limits these harmful compounds, significantly increasing the lifespan of the wet belt.
Is It Mandatory?
Yes. If your vehicle's documentation or latest service bulletin specifies FPW9.55535/03, using anything else β even a high-quality fully synthetic 0W-30 that met the old PSA standard β is considered incorrect. If your engine fails and it is found that the incorrect oil specification was used, it could void any extended warranty claims or goodwill gestures from the manufacturer.
β οΈ Warning for DIY Mechanics and Independent Garages
Many parts lookup systems still list the older 0W-30 (PSA B71 2312) oil for PureTech engines. You must ensure that you or your mechanic specifically use a 5W-30 oil that formally carries the Stellantis FPW9.55535/03 approval. "Suitable for" is not enough β it must be formally approved.
What Should You Do?
Stellantis has extended warranties on some PureTech vehicles and issued revised service schedules following widespread failures and legal action. This is welcome, but many cars are already outside warranty age. If your vehicle is out of warranty, you carry the risk β and the cost.
