When you book a timing belt replacement, your mechanic will almost always recommend replacing the water pump at the same time. Many vehicle owners wonder if this is an unnecessary upsell. The short answer is: no, it's absolutely critical.
The Water Pump is Driven by the Timing Belt
In many modern engines, the water pump (which circulates coolant to stop the engine overheating) is physically driven by the timing belt. This means that to access the water pump, the mechanic has to remove the timing belt anyway.
Why Not Just Change the Belt?
If you fit a brand new, highly-tensioned timing belt onto an old, worn water pump pulley, the increased tension can cause the old water pump bearings to fail shortly after. If the water pump bearing collapses or seizes, it will throw the new timing belt off, completely destroying your engine.
False Economy
A water pump is a relatively cheap part (usually Β£30-Β£60). However, the labour to reach the water pump is expensive (often 3 to 6 hours). If your old water pump starts leaking coolant six months after your timing belt was changed, you will have to pay for all that labour all over again. Furthermore, coolant destroys rubber timing belts, so you'd need to buy a second new timing belt too.
